Terrain
As you can see from these pictures, sections of the walk are off the beaten track, remote, stunning, varied and rewarding, including areas difficult for many visitors to find. There are inevitably some sections on the road, which I normally dislike but over this distance I found them a welcome relief!
Kit
We will be immensely lucky if we get good weather throughout so some warmer and certainly waterproofed gear would be needed. We can send out a recommended kit list nearer the time if requested. The appropriate footwear is vital as could be hats and gloves or (even in the Dales) sun cream, a sunhat and sunglasses on occasions. Please be suitably prepared for every type of weather as it can change suddenly in the hills. We advise guests to bring a flask and a sandwich/snack tub.
Guiding
I have a logbook for those of you who wish to keep tabs on your progress each day and enables you to stamp your book on route at each of the pubs as we go.
I will try to provide information about the area, wildlife, flora and beer on route!
It is not compulsory to have a drink in each pub, I have not set any challenge regarding alcohol! Some may choose to embrace that challenge too but be warned that the earliest time we visit a pub is on day 2 at 0845! Just visiting the various pubs is enough to complete the Ales in the Dales! What your group decide to do is up to you but remember safety on the hills will be my priority.
- Please note due to the nature of the itinerary and the route, the schedule can change due to a number of different factors including pub closures, weather events etc. Whilst we will do our best to overcome changes we may have to change the itinerary to suit.
Fitness
There is always a range of pace and fitness on any walk and everyone joining the break should appreciate that they are joining a group. Having said that, every effort is made to allow everyone to start the day, to walk at their preferred pace and regroup when necessary and to leave a walk when they have had enough. Being surefooted is an advantage but no navigational skills are required as all walks are guided. Sam will be following us in the support vehicle so therefore always providing options especially on the longer days. It won’t be popular however to simply get a lift to the top of every hill and then start again at the bottom!!
Travel to the Start/Parking
Arrival on Sunday is to Grassington where the cars can be left for the week in the long stay National Trust Car Park at a cost of £15. Driving to Grassington is 30 miles from the A1 and 11 miles from Skipton. Please call us if you need information regarding public transport.
Walk Days
Although some of the days may pass Public Conveniences, this is not often the case. Toilets are accessed with a 20p inside the National Park but wild wees are often the only option! The routes each day vary from 10 – 15 miles and each day includes some ascent.
