Leyburn, a quintessential Yorkshire Dales town, transforms into a festive wonderland thanks to a playful, competitive spirit between its legendary independent shops. Window wars, rural charm, and mischievous Elves on the Shelf. A holiday visit you can't miss!
The Yorkshire town of Leyburn has escaped all of the big branded shops. There are no chains, plenty of independent coffee shops but no global companies. The iconic Campbells store has stood in the market square since 1868 as a family run Yorkshire Dales Institution with its grocers, butchers, deli and extensive wine and spirits selection. There are several stores in the town that have stood the test of time and remain as traditional and legendary as ever.
When these stores embrace Christmas and things get a tad competitive, it leads to a festive spectacle well worth a visit. The shop windows are beautifully and imaginatively decorated, lit up with sparkle and colour. To reflect the rural setting of the town, there are plenty of animals amongst the displays, although not many penguins in the local area! Some of the window dressers are happy to join in the fun of the mischievous Christmas Elf on the Shelf playing havoc each day in their quest to cause mayhem and fun!

Last Saturday, the Christmas lights were lit across the square as the local residents welcomed the reindeer who were pleased to enjoy a carrot or two from any children brave enough to get up close.
The evenings might be darker earlier but the lights in this beautiful and historic town create a warmth and joy to all who stay with us over the winter months. The Lodge looks cosy, welcoming and full of Christmas cheer and you can avoid the sprouts if you take the long route round!
